Mary Lu (Cawood) Sanders

July 29, 1931 ~ April 9, 2018 (age 86)

      Greensboro NC: Mary Lu Cawood Sanders, 86 of Greensboro NC went to be with the Lord on Monday April 9, 2018  after passing away at Whitestone Masonic & Eastern Star Home.

      Mary Lu was born on July 29, 1931 in Barbourville, Kentucky the daughter of the late Charles D. Cawood, M.D. and Helen Rinke Cawood, R.N., her brother David Cawood, M.D. predeceased her.

      She graduated from Middlesboro High School 5th in her class and was first chair flute.  In the University of Kentucky Concert Band she was first chair flute and solo piccolo. At UK she majored in art. In 1958 she married the love of her life Don P. Sanders. They were soulmates. Don passed away August 3, 2017.

      Mary Lu was a charter member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists, a past board member of the Greensboro Artists Guild and a member of the National League of American Pen Women.  She had numerous art shows in Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina.  Many of her paintings are all over the U.S. and are cherished by their owners. After moving to Greensboro in 1972 she retired from UNC-Greensboro as Medical Records Manager in the Student Health Center. In 1982 she was nominated by UNCG for the Governors Excellence Award for her devotion to the university.  In her retirement she enjoyed camping, photography, her art, genealogy research and traveling to Kentucky and the Outer Banks.

      Survivors include son, David Cawood Sanders (Barbara) of Southern Shores, NC; daughter Marikay Sanders Abuzuaiter (Isa); grandsons Joey and Michael Abuzuaiter, Dave Sanders (Kali); granddaughter Elizabeth Sanders Gillispie (Lucas) and great granddaughters Elorah, Teaghan and Lily; sister-in-law Joan MacGregor (Don), niece Alice Sheehan; sister-in-law Charlotte Cawood.

      The family wants to thank Dr. Mark Perini, the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, the staff of Whitestone Care and Wellness facility, her many friends, her loving neighbors Joe McCaffrey and John and Jeannie Martin and especially her Fellowship Church family for all of their support and love.  

      A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday April 18, 2018 at Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 2005 New Garden Rd. Greensboro NC with the Rev. Nancy Dederer & Rev. M. Gray Clark officiating the service. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service time. A reception will be held following the service in the fellowship hall.  In lieu of flowers the family ask that memorials be made to Fellowship Presbyterian Church.
