James Wallace Herndon

June 10, 1931 ~ May 13, 2018 (age 86)

James Wallace Herndon, 86, of Greensboro, North Carolina, died Sunday, May 13th, 2018 surrounded by his family at Beacon Place of Greensboro. He was born June 10th, 1931 in Forsyth County to the late William and Dorothy Herndon. He was the 2nd oldest of 5 siblings. He graduated from Greensboro High School in 1949 and retired from AT&T in 1989 after 38 years of service as a communications engineer.

James’s greatest achievement in life, even until his final days, was his undying love of saving and investing.  He was well known for his brilliant mind. Almost every spare minute, was spent tirelessly working out complicated math calculations, rarely using a calculator. His commitment to investing ran so deep; many times he was left with only a few dollars to survive each month, which never fazed him. Observing this unwavering commitment and discipline, was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was living proof that anything was possible if you wanted it bad enough.

He will best be remembered by his children for his uniqueness, wonderful sense of humor, and his love of competitive swimming. He encouraged his children, grandchildren, as well as many others in the community to give swimming “their all”. His excitement and love of swimming was apparent to everyone that knew him. He especially enjoyed discovering a swimmer, unknown to others, who displayed raw talent and natural ability.

James is survived by his nine children;  son Pete Herndon and wife Maggie of Las Cruces New Mexico, son Mark Herndon and wife Debbie of Brown Summit, son Tim Herndon and wife Donna of Reidsville, son Lane Herndon of Greensboro, daughter Wendy Myers and husband Kenneth of Greensboro, daughter Cindy Rochelle and husband Mike of Greensboro, son Hilton Herndon and wife Tabatha of Greensboro, son Brad Herndon of Greensboro, daughter Jill Mandala and husband Pete of Greensboro,  along with 27 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister Martha Dunsil of Greensboro.

James was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara “Bobbie” Herndon, infant daughter Barbara Herndon, brothers Jack and Joseph Herndon, and his sister Nancy Frady.
