Darryl Mario Gilyard, son of the late Wallace Gilyard, Jr. and the late Polly L. Miller Gilyard, was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, October 7, 1954. He departed this life peacefully following a lengthy illness, February 8, 2018 at Hospice of High Point, NC. His last years were spent at Meridian Center Assisted Living Facility, under the watchful care of his youngest brother, Tony.
Darryl attended school in Guilford County, where he excelled academically and in sports. He attended James B. Dudley Sr. High and Grimsley Sr. High Schools, graduating from Grimsley in 1973. He was awarded many accolades for his athletic accomplishments in football, including, “Player of the Year” and the “North Carolina All Stars” awards in 1972; “The Golden Helmet” and the “Most Outstanding Scholar/Athlete” of 1973. Darryl continued his education and football career at Chowan Jr. College in Murfreesboro, NC on a full athletic scholarship.
Darryl had a quiet and gentle spirit, and a smile that would light up a room. His was a loving son, father, grandfather, and brother.
His love for sports continued throughout his life. The Carolina Tarheels were his favorite football and basketball teams. He also enjoyed Old School R&B music. Some of his favorite groups were Sly & the Family Stones, the Temptations, and the O’Jays.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Polly Gilyard. He leaves to cherish his loving memories, one daughter, Diesha Farrow (Carl); three brothers, Antonio “Tony”, Garry and Wayne Gilyard; four grandchildren, Antaysha Meadows, Nadia, Deon’ja, and Dya Gilyard; one great-grandchild, Ava Sweptson all of Greensboro, NC; and a host of friends and family.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018, 2:00 pm, at Triad Cremation Society & Chapel.
