Andrew Bernard SlateMay 5, 1958 ~ December 31, 2017 (age 59)
On December 31, 2017, Andrew "Andy" Bernard Slate of Kernersville, NC passed away at Hospice of the Piedmont after a yearlong struggle with multiple health complications.
Andy was born 1958 in Kernersville, NC to Ralph and Dora (Weavil) Slate. He graduated from East Forsyth High School in 1976 and from North Carolina State University with a degree in Biological and Agricultural Engineering in 1981. Following his graduation, Andy joined a research unit with the Agricultural Research Service, USDA, and spent over 36 years researching and developing methods to detect contaminants related to food safety worldwide. He was known throughout the department for his ingenuity, selflessness and famous practical jokes. Andy loved computers, fishing, gardening, raising chickens, fossil and gem hunting and most importantly, watching NC State football.
Andy is survived by his daughter, Andrea Rodriguez and husband Diego, of Durham, NC, grandson, Sebastian Rodriguez, siblings, Gary Slate and wife Denice of Kernersville, NC, Rex Slate and wife Gayle of Kernersville, NC, Doug Slate and wife Shirley of Kernersville, NC, Vicki Newsome and husband Wilson of Colfax, NC, Jill Shelnut and husband Phil of Concord, NC, Tina Kennedy and husband Rick of Kernersville, NC, Jeff Slate of Kernersville, NC, John Slate and wife Tammy of Kernersville, NC along with multiple generations of nieces and nephews therein. Andy is also remembered with love by former spouse Louise O'Hara Slate of Morrisville, NC, mother-in law, Emily King O'Hara of Bedford, MA, sister-in-law Emily O'Hara and husband Mark Gendreau of Andover, MA, sister-in-law Grace Therriault and husband Carl of Haverhill, MA, sister-in-law Alice Promisel and husband Keith of Templeton, MA.
Andy was famous for his intellect, charm, and undeniable sense of humor. He was an avid prankster and incredible story teller. Above all else, his infectious smile will be remembered by all who knew him. In his final days, Andy encouraged all his loved ones to celebrate his upcoming journey into his spiritual life, with undeniable hope that he would be free and happy.
A celebration of life service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the Fellowship Hall of Smith Grove Baptist Church, 2707 Sandy Ridge Road, Colfax, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that all donations be made out to the Dr. Peter L. Mente Undergraduate Biomedical Engineering Scholarship. Andy was preceded in death by his best friend Peter Mente in 2014.
