Sopheap Heng was born on April 23, 1951, in Siem Riep, Cambodia. She was a refugee through the Khmer Rouge which had landed her and her son to be separated from her daughter. She became a refugee in Thailand and the Philippines. It wasn’t until the mid-80's they discovered each other’s whereabouts through the refugee camp. She came to America in July of 1986. In early 1990, Sopheap and her son Veasna were reunited with her daughter Kim in Van Nuys California.
Sopheap was a very lively person who loved fashion, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. She loved giving back to her local communities and everyone back home in Cambodia.
She also enjoyed traveling and being very independent. She lived the majority of her life in California.
Back in 2018, she was diagnosed with rectal cancer and she underwent chemo/radiation in late 2018/2019. She went into remission until they discovered her cancer came back in 2021, even though she chose to not receive any modern medicine she was still able to live a full life through it. Even up to her last days, she was still upbeat and joyful, she was filled with so much laughter even through her tough battle. During her last month, she spoke to each and every one of her children and grandchildren individually to grant her last wishes which made her passing easier. At 12:50 am on March 16th, 2023, Sopheap took her final breath in the comfort of her home with her loved ones.
