Obituary

Gregory Thomas Fowler, Sr., of Greensboro, passed away March 9, 2023 after a brief illness.

Greg was born on January 10, 1949 to Levy Astor Fowler, Jr. and Margaret Ann Lucado Fowler in Durham, North Carolina. After graduating from Augusta Military Academy in 1968, he enrolled at Elon College in Elon, NC, graduating in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

After graduation, Greg began his twenty-two year career with Burlington Industries Drapery Division where he began in Customer Service and served as the Division Planning Manager before moving on to a career in sales. On September 11, 1971, he married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Louise Spencer. Together they created many joyous memories and spent the next 51 years loving and supporting each other through all of life's trials and tribulations.

Greg and Carolyn would go on to have two children, Tommy and Jenny. Greg was a devoted father, husband and friend; always bringing laughter to any room he entered with his wonderful sense of humor. He loved cheering on his children in their various athletic endeavors and was so proud of their personal and professional accomplishments. Greg loved all kinds of music, especially The Beatles. He was an avid sports fan following the Carolina Panthers and UNC Tar Heels. Greg and his brother Bill played golf daily growing up and was an accomplished golfer for much of his life until a wrist injury stifled his ability to play. He kept up with the sport he adored by watching any golf tournament that was on television.

Above all, his favorite place to be was on the beach. For nearly two decades, Greg brought his family to Sunset Beach, NC each year for a week in the summer to meet his  dearest friends, the “Beach Group”. This group has remained close for more than four decades, and is always there for one another and each other’s children. Greg looked forward to annual trips to Charleston and Florida with his family and loved to watch his granddaughters swim and play in the sand.

Family was always paramount to Greg. He sacrificed many personal pleasures to provide his children the opportunity to thrive. He even coached Tommy’s soccer team. Greg spent countless hours driving to Durham, NC and Richmond, VA to care for his parents and Carolyn’s parents.

Greg was predeceased by his father, Astor and mother, Margaret; as well as his half-brother, Donald Webber. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 51 years, Carolyn Spencer Fowler; brother, William (Bill) Stephen Fowler and wife Terri Fowler. Greg is survived by his children: Gregory Thomas Fowler Jr. and wife Debra Bard Fowler; daughter, Jenny Fowler Peck and husband David Peck; grandchildren, Lacey Ann Fowler and Sydney Louise Peck; and numerous other family and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 23rd at 2pm at Christ United Methodist Church, 410 N Holden Road, Greensboro, NC 27410. The family will receive friends following the service in the Disciple Room at the church. Donations in Greg’s memory can be made to Christ United Methodist Church, of which he was a member.
