Mari Lucille Astin Smith, age 50, of Danville, VA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday December 21, 2017, at Hospice of Rockingham, NC, after a long and courageous battle with liver disease. She was born on September 13th, 1967 to George William Astin and Joyce Nazworthy Astin. who both proceeded her in death.

Mari formerly worked as a teacher for Just Kids of Danville, Lawrence and Nester Distributing Company, CIT Group, and Mills Convenience Store of Danville, until she was unable to work due to her illness.

Mari was a loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend to many. Mari was of the Methodist Faith and grew up being part of the Astin Family Puppet Ministry at Calvary Church of the Nazarene, as well as being and a teacher in the Children’s Church program at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church for many years. Mari was an extremely talented artist and crafter and an avid cook and baker. She leaves behind her beloved friend and companion, “Sapato” who was a rescued stray. Mari loved her time with family and friends and spending time outdoors and at the beach.

She will be greatly missed by her surviving twin sister, Martha Astin Fox and husband Mike of Callands, Lora Astin Knight and husband Gary (whom she called her Brother) of Brosville, Donna Astin Hawker and husband Allen of Ringgold, along with her nieces and nephew, Zane Knight (Shelley), Chelzea Knight, and Brittany Lynskey; and grand-nieces and nephew, Trevor Knight, Mattie Lynskey and Coraline Whalen; and very special friends JoJo and Dale Turner of Danville.

A memorial service will be held at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 7:00 PM.  The family will receive friends one hour prior at 6:00 PM.  The family requests that in leu of flowers, donations be made to The Hospice House of Rockingham County in Mari's name.
